Now up on the bridge we were turning onto in our last episode.
| Here’s the official name of the NY 5-NY 8-NY 12 highway.
Most regular folks just call it ‘The Arterial’
|
|
This road is basically a fast boulevard with a few traffic signals. |
|
Those include railway signals, since a railway parallels the road. |
The Oswego Street signal. The road becomes a freeway beyond the light.
| Just past Oswego Street. I don’t know what sort of factory is at right. | |
Railway vans are lined up just before the Burrstone Road junction.
Between Burrstone and French Roads on NY 5-NY 8-NY 12 southbound.
With all the boxes, the right hand sine is too busy to comprehend quickly at speed. Better to indicate the main road joined then have supplementary directions at the end of the slip road.
Suicide slip for Lomond Place and all it’s mates.
We get ready to turn off to NY 840.
As soon as we do, we encounter this signal and level crossing. NY 840 is a new freeway, but nothing was done with the NY 5-NY-8-NY 12 junction just upstream. NY 840 was just tacked onto it. I guess NYSDOT didn’t want to spend the $ on a railway grade seperation.
Advance for the NY 5A junction.
A long view of NY 840 showing all sorts of Roadly goodness.
NY 5A junction.
At this point in time Middle Settlement Road was the end of NY 840 It’s since been extended as a super-2 with level junctions to Halsey Road.
End of the line!
Super-2 segment of NY 840 under construction.
Halsey Road crossing of NY 840.
We eventually made our way to NY 233, Where we found this ‘Thruway Authority’ blazer. Oh, well, close enough for government work, eh?
In the Fullness of Time NY 233 meets up with NY 69 Which meet up with NY 49 and NY 365 near Rome Where it is said that all roads lead!
What’s one of these pages without at least one SINE SALAD!
Wild, Wild West (well, not rilly, but it does sound good!)
The ‘Y’ junction south of the Rome CBD. Technically the end of the Utica-Rome Expressway.
The viaduct over the Erie Canal Heading northwest into Rome.
More sine salad at Depyster Street in Rome. This is south of the NY 46 junction.
| Immediately north of the NY 46 junction.
The eastbound[north by posting] left turn to NY 46 is carried under westbound NY 49 in a subway. you need a scorecard to keep track of all the changes. |
Northwest of the Rome CBD, NY 69 peels off Continuing northwest; NY 46 and 49 bear west-southwest.
Here’s the signal for the split.
A disused railway after the split.
NY 46 and 49 heading west from Rome.
NY 49 and NY 13 north junction near Vienna.
And the complementary junction near Edgewater Beach. NY 13 follows the east shore of Oneida Lake.
A NY 49 ROAD! shot!
Crossing the County line and clinching another one!
Crossing the IH 81 at j32, East of the Village of Central Square. Now there’s an exciting name.
We meet IH 81's companion, US Federal Bananarama Highway 11 In central Central Square.
Not too far past that, Some flyboy’s gone and parked his jet.
Back in the country again, With some motorcyclists enjoying the fine day.
Way out here, you get 4-way stops at highway junctions. This is the NY 264 junction.
It’s rilly busy out on NY 264.
Another long shot of NY 49 west of NY 264.
END! NY 49
Oddly the directional sign was at the far side of the junction.
Coming into Fulton on NY 3
NY 3 swings south here, bypassing central Fulton.
NY 3 and NY 481 meet in Fulton. This is two blocks east of the Oswego River.
A NY 3 long shot this time!
Six! Sines found near the NY 3-NY 104 junction in Hannibal
NY 34 and NY 104 junction-also near Hannibal.
NY 104 west of Hannibal.
NY 38 and NY 104 at North Victory. We turned south on NY 38, here.
Southbound on NY 38.
Truss bridge on NY 38 at the confluence of the Seneca River and the Erie Canal
A northbound view of the same bridge, with the old span peeping out at the left.
The old Conquest Road Bridge over the Seneca River This is one of what was two spans and provides access to Haiti Island and Mosquito Point.
The modern NY 38 span from Haiti Island
The Seneca River span of the old bridge. This is overlaid with a Bailey Bridge. The road makes a sharp bend and a steep descent to Haiti Island at the point where I’m standing. The Erie Canal span would be directly behind me.
Horribly Foreshortened numerals on this headroom sine.
NY 38 meets NY 31 in Port Byron, just south of the Thruway.
| To the west, at Montezuma, NY 31 and NY 90 meet.
This is the northern end of NY 90. NY 31 crossed under the Thruway a bit back, So now we’re north of it, again. |
Southbound on NY 90. You’d hardly mistake it for IH 90.
Another looooong shot.
Just after it crosses under the Thruway, NY 90 turns west, parallelling it.
Here you have IH 90 and NY 90 running in the same space.
NY 90 turns back to the south, here. Someone figured this would be a fine place to store containers. Whatever.
Approaching the NY 5-US 20 junction.
Signage at the junction includes an Erie Canal Blazer. And a rather odd directional plate placement.
Menard Memorial Bridge over the Erie Canal on US 20. The view is west.
Another route jumble at the junction of NY 89.
Just after the signal, NY 318 peels off.
NY 414 South JN with US 20 and NY 5 in Seneca Falls.
US 20, NY 5 and NY 414 heading west out of Seneca Falls.
Here’s a traffic light! Note that all the masts are on the near side of the junction, and angled diagonally over the road.
This guy doesn’t want to ‘give away’ the land his ancestors stole from the Indians. Hay, they weren’t using it right then, anyway.
We did a U turn, Here’s the Menard Bridge again, eastbound on US 20.
Back southbound on NY 90, Just shy of Union Springs.
Nothing finer than a Summer Day on the road.
We get a look at Cayuga Lake north of Aurora.
NY 90 turns east, and we meet NY 34B in beautiful Downtown King Ferry.
Southbound on NY 34B.
Salmon Creek bridge on NY 34B
NY 34 and 34B run concurrently for a bit, then split.
Here’s the offslip for NY 34B.
Entering the Town of Dryden. Not the fanciest sine, then, is it?
More stunningly exciting END! Action!
NY 34B END!s, but you can continue on the road east to McLean and Cortland.
Eastbound on Peruville Road.
|
I always wanted a pony(truss bridge). |
|
Sometimes County roads can look as good as state highways. |
|
Mc Lean Road crosses NY 13 southwest of Cortland. |
|
Footie’s Freeze? Only if I don’t wear shoes in winter.
