Thruway to Rome |
NY 365 junction with NY 31 north of the Thruway.
The direction sign is a bit odd-Series “E” font,
and all caps. |
Northbound on NY 365 north of the NY 31.
Note the center reservation.
Now USUALLY this would be flush with a box beam rail,
but then when you EXPECT something,
NY obliges you by doing the opposite. |
NY 365 junction with James Street after NY 26 joins.
The turn lanes are quite long, and the central reservation is wide here.
Taking the “Exit” leads you into Rome. |
Lawrence Street junction on NY 365.
This is a “Right In, Right Out” junction,
Not a proper elevated junction as such.
Southbound traffic can get here by means of a U-Turn.
The reference marker shows the lowest highway number-NY 26. |
NY 365-26-49-69 T-junction at Rome.
The western teminus of the Utica-Rome Expressway.
From maps you get the impression this is a level junction.
It's not. This is just east of the Lawerence Street snap above. |

NY 365 leaves NY 49 just after crossing the Erie Canal
Here's the advance sign eastbound.
The gantry westbound is for the T-junction.
NY 49 curves north here to cross the Erie Canal
The NY 365 junction is upcoming.
Passing by Tuxedo Park Mobile Home Park,
near the former Griffs AFB,
That's a level crossing ahead for a railway,
that crossing is controlled by the signal you see.
Approaching the NY 825 junction for Griffiss Parkway.
This leads to the former Griffs AFB(Griffis Technology Park to YOU, pal!),
the site of “Woodstock '99” festival.
In the middle of the Griffiss Parkway junction here.
An old section of NY 49-
It looks just like the NY 365 snap above.
Approaching the NY 291 junction.
This was closed when I went through,
because of a bridge removal on NY 291.
The NY 291 overpass.
You can't get there from here.
This is west of where a pederstrian bridge collapsed on the freeway-
during the building of the road, killing 2 NYSDOT workers.
It's a bit spooky passing by the abutments.
This is a historic snap. The URE now is posted at 65 MPH.
This was done with a bit of dramatic flair,
Bagging the 65 sines and all that;
as opposed to the NY 17-IH 684 speed change,
where they just ripped out the 55 sines and planted the 65 sines one day.
Note the PENNDOT size “55”
The “DETOUR” for NY 291.
The road name in a box is also used in Region 8.
I like it, it sets the road name off.
NY 49 eastbound crosses the Thruway on this bridge.
From here on in NY 49's carriageways are seperated by the Thruway.
A railway overpass near Edic Road.
This shows the 4-carriageway configuration as best as can be done....
The Edic Road sign itself-
Giving a good view of the name-boxing NYSDOT likes.
Approaching the clustre-spørk® Junction in Utica,
where highway numbers start flying everywhere.
The end of NY 49 and junction with IH 790,
as well as NY 8-12 with NY 5 in the area.
IH 790 goes south into Utica per maps...
The Orphan Interstate Spur
Technically on IH 790 now.
Not like you can tell by the signage....
A view of IH 90 and IH 790 east.
There is a direct connection to the IH 90 here,
Westbound you gave to go on a surface street to link from IH 90.
At least IH 587 in Kingston is sort of close to IH 87.
But then, IH 790 at least gets billing on the Thruway.
An “EXPRESSWAY ENDS” sine.
Surprise, surprise.
Oh, yeah, IH 790 ends here, too.
The only IH 790 shield that's independently mounted eastbound. |
The last IH 790 “EXIT”.
Ahead is the level junction for NY 5 and the end of the freeway.
JN 21's slip roads pass to the south of here.
Looking back at the IH 790
You can see the overpass linking from IH 790 east to the Thruway JN 21-
Barely. |
