Saddled up his quasi-trusty 88-88 crapmobile, and loaded with caffiene, nicotine and an 8 hour Minidisc full of Bhangra, Reggae and Dub Weirdness, Took to the road to bring you yet more of the spiffenest road snapz in the Boxing Day Blowout! tradition. The Route: US 44-NY 55 and US 209 to Ellenville NY 52 from Ellenville to Liberty Old Highway 17(county highways)/NY 17 freeway from Liberty to Binghamton IH 81 and IH 88 from Binghamton to Oneonta NY 28 from Oneonta to Kingston. | |

there used to be an island on this bridge, but it was removed, for reasons unknown. the reservation is now marked by painted lines. |

| West of the overpass, the road has been narrowed.
This was four lanes, and the original road edge is marked by the lamps on wooden poles. They are also still the working lights; as the aluminum ones haven’t been turned on yet. |

this is now a mandatory turn. You’ve seen the Summariffic® direction sign before. I doubt it will survive the final phase of the reconstruction. There is a concrete pedestal in place for a half-gantry. |

| The roundabout is small and tight;
even more so than the one at Thruway j19 at Kingston. Large articulateds find this a joy, I'll wager. Wonder how long it will be before the signs get clipped. |

that hugs the Beaver Kill. Not much interesting on it, sadly. |

| Up the road at Horton, one runs into this nice surprise:
An old truss bridge over the Beaver Kill near NY 17 j92. This one is unusual in that it has a steel deck. I think this is a Croton Bridge joint, The nameplate was too high to tell. There are also brackets for weight restriction sines. Just for perspective, I threw in the freeway bridge crossing near here. |

west of Horton, Delaware County Highway 17 runs below the NY 17 freeway. The Beaver kill is to the south(left). I’ve been atop this viaduct a lot of times and thought nothing of it. Now I know why it’s here! |

At Fishs Eddy(goddam fishs!),
Delaware County Highway 28 passes over this bridge. This looks to be an old railway bridge, because it’s both heavy and narrow. The New York, Ontario and Western Railway went through Fishs Eddy I suspect that this is one of the railway’s bridges. |

County Highway 28(old NY 17 but not rilly) runs side-by-side with the westbound carriageway for a mile or so. This was a scary section with level junctions and no turning lanes in 1998. |

Westbound approaching the IH 81 you have j75; then NY 17 and IH 81 are concurrent between IH 81 j2 and a scary un-numbered junction that's half over the Chenango River and abuts against a great huge hill. On NY 17 immediately west of the junction is the Justly famous and scary “Kamikaze Curve” NY 17 skips junction numbers 73 and 74 Some maps show these numbers as concurrent with IH 81 j3[74] and j4[73]; and the western IH 81 junction has no number. |

incomplete junction north of IH 81 j5.
There’s the great fault in sequential junction numbering: What to do with junctions bunged in later. This junction has another fault: no southbound IH 81 to eastbound IH 88 link. South to east traffic has to U-turn at j5-Making two lefts at traffic lights. Cheaper than a flyover, I guess. |

outer(“service”) roads. There’s not a lot of room here. |

| NYSDOT likes to do weird things to guide sine shield cutouts.
like this huge shield w/Series “D” numbers maximally kerned. You could fit all known prime numbers into that shield in Series “D”. The short lines between the painted lane lines are NYSDOT’s dirt chEEp replacement for cat’s eyes, which have an abnormally short lifespan in this state. How effective are they? Let’s just say you get what you pay for. |

most of the length of the motorway. sometimes they’re even needed. |
