Not the best photo
of me ever taken, but it does show me in my "natural" environment:
at the wheel of my "war wagon" heading for an SCA function or
looking for my next photo opportunity. |
|
Along AR 92 4 miles south of Center
Ridge
South 92 and East 92 is correct on a technicality since "south"
92
does travel mostly south back to IH 40 at Plumerville.

An old suspension
bridge along Cottonwood Rd north of Harrison, AR. |
|
There are several
of these bridges along "Scenic 7" north of Hot Springs.
Built by the WPA, they are in various conditions.
Some are still in very good condition while others have been replaced
by metal guardrail. |
|
Another of the stone
bridges along AR 7 supplemented with a pony truss. |
|
Along
K-126 west of Pittsburg, KS a beautiful concrete truss bridge from 1927
(the bottom photo shows the date). It's in
really good condition given its age.
BTW: in 1927, this section
of K-126 was actually US 160 ! |

 |
Trailblazer for
Washington County 65 at Greenland, AR
When IH 540 was built,
part of Campbell Rd (County Road 65)
got cut off by the new highway so a new access road was built to connect
Campbell Road to Wilson St.
Photo is looking south
on Campbell just south of Wilson. |
 |
Along AR 187 near Busch, AR 187 ends
at US 62, but someone put up an AR 62 shield
I didn't photograph it, but there is another along AR 103 as it approaches
US 62 near Green Forest.
To my knowledge, there is NO AR
62.

 |
An old concrete bridge sits all but
abandoned along the east side of US71 just north of Brentwood, AR,
It's pretty much ignored as in the Spring the bridge is all but obscured
by the surrounding trees,
shrubs, and tall grass.
|
 |
Looking north towards the old bridge.
There's still some semblance of a roadway,
but it's used mostly
as a driveway between the neighbor's houses.
|
 |
Old concrete and
steel bridge along US71 over the Ouchita River at Acorn, AR |
 |
A concrete bridge
over the Ouachita River just south of the concrete and steel bridge above |
|
Rare Button Copy
sign in Tulsa, OK at the Broken Arrow Expressway and (I think) Sheridan
Road
(this would be US 64 just northwest of
the IH 44 JN) |
 |
Old Pony Truss bridge
west of Choteau, OK along old Hwy 33.
Despite some rust, it still appears to be in pretty good shape. |
 |
Older pony-truss
bridge on US 64 Bus at Alma, AR. |
 |
Guide
signs on AR 94 for Horseshoe Bend Recreation Area on AR 94 at Spur 94.
The modern sign is encountered eastbound, the older one westbound.
Since black and white signs were sent south in the '71 MUTCD;
and what ones Texas and New Mexico were
mostly gone by 1989, that right hand sign is OLD :) |
 |
Just a standard sign assembly for
AR 53 and US 82 Business at Stamps, AR.
Only thing missing is the "straight ahead" assembly for "mainline"
US 82
(which Arkansas is good about ignoring).
You turn south at the intersection of AR 53 and Business US 82 and what
do you see?
US 82 Business is now US 82 TRUCK !
|
|
Along the Cherokee
Turnpike (aka US 412) in Oklahoma comes this guide sign for "old"
US 412
(now "Scenic 412" or "Alternate 412" depending who
you ask).
This photo was taken around dusk and you can see how the brown shield
almost fades away.
It needs a white background behind the shield and larger numbers
to be properly seen (especially at 75mph) |
|
Cherokee
Turnpike junction assembly near Kansas, Oklahoma.
(In two places at once again). |
|
Scenic(Old,
Alternate, whatever)US 412 meets US 59 in Kansas, Oklahoma.
This is a crossroads-East Scenic US 412 leaves by a short slip road a
few feet back.
THIS IS THE FULL-SIZE
SNAP. |

2 photos taken at the Junction of
AR 12 and 23,
about 10 miles south of Eureka Springs (or 3 miles east of Clifty).
AR 127 is one of those highways in
Arkansas with multiple locations. There's
another 127 at Garfield, AR and yet another near Forum, AR.
This particular one actually begins
at AR 12 about a mile west of here and
provides access to the Hobbs Wildlife Management Area.
I have no idea who posted the first
sign for 127 (maybe the Madison County
Road Department?), but in the second photo,
you can see AHTD put up an official "trailblazer" for 127.
|
 |
Old truss bridge along old US 71
south of Potter, AR (south of Mena)
Although I titled the photo AR 375, it's actually south of there along
Polk County 37.
If you go north along 37, it eventually becomes AR 375 into Mena.
|
 |
OK... here's an
odd one. Looking north along AR 107 just north of Macon.
If you follow Pulaski County 89, you eventually get to West AR 89, which
begins
at the Pulaski/Faulkner County Line.
Travelling 5 miles north of here you come to AR 89 East which goes to
Cabot,
so it's somewhat of a mystery why this section is a "mere" County
Road. |
 |
Yet another b/w
sign, this one looking south on AR 21/AR 221
just before US 62 in Berryville, AR. |
 |
Just a "wide
spot" in the road along AR 21 approx 5 miles north of Berryville.
Just a tiny lil mini urban area. :) |
|
The mileage sign for Oak Grove and
Blue Eye is also along AR 21,
just north of Urbanette.
AR 21 seems to have the most b/w
signs I've seen in the area. I don't know if
AHTD is waiting for them to wear out or just forgot they're there.
|
|
OK, I'm a little twisted I guess(not
you-MODOT! Ha!).
Looking south on US 71 near Carthage, the exit is Route V D.
Route V travels south on old 71 for a brief stretch then turns SE along
old Alt US 66 towards MO 96.
Route D travels north for a short while along old 71 then turns west
towards Alba.
That font's a bit off, too.

|
From 2002 along
IH 540 just north of the AR 59 Exit. This photo shows a bit of an anomaly:
Interstate Oklahoma 40 and Interstate Arkansas 540.
This was taken about
a month after the Arkansas River Bridge disaster in Oklahoma.
Eastbound IH 40 was detoured along OK 9, US59 and US271 in Oklahoma as
well as IH 540 in Arkansas. |
 |
A black on yellow
STOP sign- A Tim Brown Especial!
Located at the JB Hunt Trucking Co. Corporate HQ, Lowell, AR
Yes, that's my "war wagon"(The Backlinmobile!)in
the background ;) |
|
Look
at this sine closely. There is NO
MO 44 and hasn't been one for quite some time!
This road eventually leads north via MO CH "E" to MO 76.
The road straight on is AR 94 and the branch to the left is AR 344 in
Pea Ridge AR,
very near the state line.
We're facing north. |
|
Here's something
you don't see very often anymore:
a 2d style trailblazer for a 3d Interstate.
As far as I know, this is the only one in existence (at least around Western
Arkansas).
Photo was taken along 4th Street (AR 59) in Van Buren, AR approx
1 mile west of the IH 540. |
|
This is an old WPA
project marker along AR 392 (aka Capps Rd) in Harrison, AR
There's a lot of stonework
along the side of the road (walls, etc) and
Capps Rd runs along the slope of a hill so I'm guessing the stonework
was done by
the WPA to keep the hillside from washing out the road?? |
 |
An older-style button copy sign for
the Muskogee Turnpike along US 62 just east of Muskogee.
Notice how there are buttons on the numbers... something you rarely
see anymore.
This is a junction with a short free section of
the turnpike.
|
 |
From Galena, KS
a small trailblazer for the Will Rogers Turnpike.
Spotted along K-26 just south of K-66.
Larger guide sign for
the Will Rogers Turnpike looking west along Baghdad Rd
(old US 166) at the intersection of K-166 and K-26. |
 |
There are lots of
these signs around Arkansas.
They are for airports (most often small, rural airports).
This particular one is just off AR 59 near Siloam Springs, AR.
OR it could be just off US62 near Berryville
(all the Airport Roads have the same number so I'm guessing it's not really
a route designation).
THIS IS THE FULL-SIZE SNAP. |
|
Farm Road(FM) 291
and Old Route US 66 near Alanreed, TX.
JN of TX 19 and Business
US 67 southwest of Sulphur Springs, TX.
Note the "67's". |
 |
On top:
Older style signage along I-40 at Memphis for AR 77 and AR 191.
Note the inner border on these signs.
Compare that to this half-mile advance
(not a thumbnail
BTW-also not David Backlin's snap)
on the bottom.
