Everyone loves to look at accidents. Nobody admits it, of course, because we'd all like ppl to think we’re all noble and stoof. But you know in yr heart of hearts we all like to look at the misfortune of others and say ‘There but for the grace of god go I’. This is the page for all of us rubberneckers, secret and not-so-secret. It starts with Alex Nitzman’s snaps, but will be supplemented by the bits of misfortune I happen to catch in my daily meanderings, in the fullness of time. Sure it’s morbid but it’s my Karma, since I have the page. So chill.

Alex Nitzman’s Accident Vidcaps

[Alex sez:] In all of my videotaping of roads since 1991, I witnessed the aftermath of many accidents.
I have included a few of the images taken from various roadtrips throughout the years...

On my move from Newark, DE to Mobile, AL 2/1999,
I passed through the Greenville, SC area after a dusting to an inch of snow occured.
It's safe to say that SCDOT doesn’t have a clue as to what salt is,
and that SC drivers haven’t a clue as to what driving in snow is...

I was stranded on Interstate 85 just south of the IH 385 junction for 2 hours without moving.
The reason being that two tractor trailers jacknifed causing all 3 of the IH 85's southbound lanes to be blocked.
Finally traffic was literally turned around using the shoulder and routed back to the previous onramp (SC something or other).
This image takes a look at two other tractor trailers that had gotten mixed up in the Greenville area.

Snow was on the ground all the way to Atlanta.
In the Greenville area 250-300 accidents were reported during the morning rush hour.
This image was taken about 20 miles south of Greenville.
One of the worst accidents I saw, but missed on video,
was a tractor trailer on it's side perpendicular to the southbound lanes of the IH 85.
The cab had been completely burnt to a crisp...(MMMMM Toasty!)

This video shot by my friend as we drove back home from a hiking trip to
Big Lagoon State Recreational Area in NW Florida. This was on Blue Angel Parkway during May of 1996.

A roadtrip on Interstate 80 during October of 1993 revealed this as being the culprit of a long backup.
Rubberneckers slowed to gawk at this. Video taken by me as my friend drove.

A trip from Mobile to Pensacola April of 1999 revealed some police activity.
Among them this burnt out car on the IH 10 eastbound.
A somewhat common occurance all things considered is seeing remnants of car fires on southern interstates.
I wonder why that is...(It's not exactly rare on the NY State Thruway, either...)

One of the reasons traffic was backed up on the IH 95 between Richmond and Fredericksburg on 7th September 1999 was this car.
The ironic thing was that this car was involved in one of two accidents within a ½ mile stretch.
Translation: One accident was caused by people slamming on their brakes to gawk at the main accident causing another accident...

Comrade Otto Yämamøto’s Casualty Vampirisim!

Okay, we start my portion of the programme with a bit of misfortune on NY 17 east of j129, where this poor sod with a food truck overturned. Not sure why, maybe he tried to change lanes too quickly or something, people rocket along NY 17 at an average of 75 MPH at any given time, and there's a lot of lane changing. This accident happened on the westbound carriageway. A tailend was just starting to build eastbound, but I managed to get through in a reasonable amount of time. Westbound traffic wasn’t so lucky. The tailend snap here is near j129-just past the accident; and extended all the way back to the toll plazas at Harriman. An X-tra bogus bonus here: Click the snap for a bigger picture

I happened by this bit of misfortune on the way to the Kingston Goodwill on Ulster Avenue.
Ulster Avenue is the main shopping street in Kingston, and there’s a lot of traffic anyway,
especially at weekends, so I didn’t think anything of it until I saw the cop cars.

And be glad that none of these poor sods are you!
