These snaps were formerly up at AA Roads, but there
wasn't enough room for them
so I adopted them and gave them a new home. Aren't I nice?(no!)
Protocol for this page is to click the links
and yr snap opens in a new window.

94 Exit Sign for Theodore Roosevelt National Park. Interstate 94 is one of a handful of Interstates that enter national parks(Interstate 75 through the Big Cypress National Preserve and Interstate 40 through Petrified Forest National Park are others.). This sign guides eastbound traffic on I-94 to Theodore Roosevelt National Park, which is reached off the main street in Medora(itself an Interstate business loop). The freeway mainline actually runs within the park boundary while the business loop runs near the southern park border. This park has two sections-the IH 94 runs through the southern porion. |

| North
Dakota Distance to Interchange. The straight-on shot shows that North Dakota prefers to use an "EXIT" tab standardized to one width for the entire state (note the additional space provided for three-digit interchange numbers with alphabetic suffixes for cloverleaf interchanges), with distance text in Series “E” Modified letters used as small caps. However, the intercharacter spacing for "EXIT" on the tab is smaller than that for "MILE" on the main sign. |
||
| North
Dakota Distance to Interchange Side View. The side shot demonstrates North Dakota's use of adhesives (rather than rivets) to secure direct-applied letter copy to the sign background. Adhesives are the preferred method for constructing legend on guide or directional informatory signs in most jurisdictions, including all of Great Britain.(Kansas uses rivets, which is fairly unusual and results in disconcerting shadows when the sign is in direct sunlight. Since the state specifications also do not require that old rivet holes be patched when route markers are removed or letter copy is rearranged, many signs appear to be perforated when backlit by the sun or car headlights.) |

Area Sign and Legal Requirements. This warning sign is specific to North Dakota, although the condition it is attempting to communicate-unfenced range-is not. It is functionally equivalent to an "OPEN RANGE/LOOSE STOCK" warning sign in northern Wyoming. The supplemental plate is designed to emphasize, without actually saying "this highway is not fenced," that farm animals can be on the road (and cause damage to vehicles) at any time. |
